How to Start a Chainsaw (Electric Powered and Gas Powered)

People who love woodworking must have a powerful tool like a chainsaw. If you are a chainsaw user then you must know that there are basically two types of Chainsaw such as electric powered Chainsaw and Gas Powered Chainsaw. Electric Powered chainsaws are very easy to start but when it comes to the gas-powered change then you have to follow few steps if you don’t know how to start a Chainsaw. Here, I would like to give you step by step guide to start a chainsaw successfully and by following the preventive safety measures.

How to Start a Gas Powered Chainsaw Step by step Guide

Read the Manual Carefully:

Whenever you buy a product, the first rule you need to follow is to read the instruction manual step-by-step. Even if you think that you have used the Chainsaw earlier but still you need to read the user manual because this product might be different from the Chainsaw you have operated earlier so don’t skip this step.

Keep in mind the safety first

Everyone should know that the power tools could be extremely dangerous whenever we use them without any experience or safety precautions. Before starting or operating the chainsaw, you have to complete all the safety measures that include wearing eye goggles, protective footwear, gloves, and all other safety items that help you to do the work with a free mind.

Set the chain Brake and close the choke carefully

Now in the next step, you have to engage the chain brake because chain brake is an essential safety feature that needs to be followed. The purpose of the chain brake is to prevent the chain from rotating as soon as the engine starts. Closing the choke means that you need to block the airflow so that the engine can start more easily.

Press the Decompression valve and Press the Primer:

You have to look for the decompression valve in your chainsaw because every chainsaw may not have this feature. If your chainsaw has a decompression valve then you have to press it instantly because it will reduce the pressure in the combustion chamber and the pressing the primer will pump gas in the carburetor. Make sure to press the primer at least 4 to 5 times to start the engine steadily.

Pull the starter cord to start your chainsaw:

Make sure to place the chainsaw in a safe position before pulling the started cord so the best place is to place it on the floor. Now hold the top handle firmly and pull the cord slow till you feel some resistance. Pull the cord three to four times till the chainsaw is properly started. Many times it happens that your chainsaw engine fires but it doesn’t properly start so in that case you have to push the choke to half choke position and pull the cord again until you hear a coughing sound from the engine. Once the tool is properly started the squeeze the throttle safely.

Doing the Warm start:

You must have heard the word cold start or warm start. The above procedure explains a cold start set up where the chainsaw is cold. A warm start means that you have used the saw recently and it is still warm so you have to repeat the steps given above for a warm start.

How to Start an Electric Powered Chainsaw

As we told you earlier that you need to check the fuel oil and spark plug position in a gas-powered chainsaw. Similarly, you need to do some maintenance tasks before starting an electric powered chainsaw.

  1. Make sure that the batteries are charged fully. (Don’t forget to have a backup battery in case of the cordless chainsaw.)
  2. In the case of a corded chainsaw, make sure that you have a good quality extension cord so that you can do your work easily.

Check the Chain brake first:

On the biggest advantage of an electric chainsaw is that you don’t need to pull the cord or squeeze the throttle to start because you require minimum effort to start. In electric chainsaw, you have to disengage the chain brake to make sure that chains will start and spin and this won’t happen until you press the trigger.

Make sure to press the safety button and then trigger switch:

It is necessary that you refer the user manual because your chainsaw safety button could be mentioned with other names such as throttle lock or trigger lock and it is located on the side of back handle. Then you just have to push the trigger switch to start the chainsaw.

Last Thoughts:

Last but not the least read to understand the complete manual first: The first and last tip I can give you is to read the instruction manual to make yourself familiar with the tool. Don’t forget to read the safety rules because ignoring them might make you fall into an accident. For example, some people wrap the cord in their hands before pulling the gas-powered chainsaw cord which is totally wrong. Don’t hold the chainsaw in one hand and pull the cord with the other hand as it can be extremely dangerous.
